Double trouble
Will the real Rod Stewart please stand up
By Jackie Bragg
A ROD STEWART lookalike who attended the legendary singer’s concert in Almerķa at the weekend proved to be so similar that he was mistaken for the real thing and escorted to Rod’s dressing room.
Tribute artist for Stewart over many years, Dylan Cassidy, arrived at the gig at the Palacio de los Juegos Mediterraneos only to be hustled inside by Spanish security, before he had a chance to explain who he was.
Speaking exclusively to the Costa Almerķa News, Dylan, who earns his living from his Rod persona singing throughout Europe, described how the mix-up had occurred.
He said: “I had no intention of attempting such a feat, you would never get away with it, even if you tried. All I did was ask for the press office. It was one of those bizarre things. The next thing I knew, I was being chaperoned into the dressing room, with all Rod’s stage gear there, hanging up ready for his performance.”
While Majorca resident Dylan tried to make himself understood, the situation became even more hilarious as Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster arrived.
Dylan’s agent Jacqui Miller told this paper that it was at this point, with “two Rods” staring directly at each other, that the security personnel finally realised their blunder.
She said: “The whole situation became a bit farcical, as we managed to leave the dressing room, but then another security guard led us back into the room! It was becoming quite embarrassing. The word ‘doble’ - the Spanish word for ‘double’ kept coming up!”
Even on his travels around Almerķa city over the weekend, moments of mistaken identity were rife for the Celtic–loving singer’s double.
Intensified by the knowledge that Rod Stewart was due to perform in Almerķa, many people assumed that Dylan was Rod.
At the airport and within the auditorium, fans continuously approached him requesting autographs and wishing to pose for photos with him, as witnessed by this reporter.
Further proof of how many people were hoodwinked by Dylan Cassidy’s Rod appearance on the night was provided by a report from the Costa Blanca Leader.
In an online article after the concert, the reporter wrote: “Those who paid for VIP tickets were not disappointed. Rod walked amongst them before the show, posing for photos and cracking jokes. He seemed as down to earth as ever.”
Dylan said he never meant to fool anyone and that he was there only to enjoy the concert, paying for front row seats to see one of his idols.
He added: “Sorry, that wasn’t Rod laughing and joking with the crowd. It was me.”
